Menstrual Cycle

Your Menstrual Cycle

Understanding your menstrual cycle — what is normal, what changes to watch for, and when to seek advice.

The menstrual cycle is a complex interplay of hormones that prepares the body for potential pregnancy each month. Understanding your cycle empowers you to recognise what is normal and identify changes that may warrant medical attention.

What is a Normal Cycle?

A typical menstrual cycle lasts between 21 and 35 days, with periods lasting 2–7 days. Blood loss of 30–80ml per period is considered normal. However, variation exists between individuals and what matters most is consistency for you.

The Four Phases

The cycle includes menstruation, the follicular phase (when follicles develop), ovulation, and the luteal phase (following ovulation). Hormonal changes during each phase affect energy, mood, and physical symptoms.

Tracking Your Cycle

Tracking your cycle helps identify patterns, predict ovulation for conception or family planning, and notice changes in frequency, duration, or heaviness. Many apps are available to assist with cycle tracking.

When to Seek Advice

Seek advice if your periods become significantly heavier, more painful, or irregular; if you bleed between periods or after intercourse; or if your periods stop altogether. These changes can reflect hormonal, structural, or other medical issues.
